Instructional Program Information

We use materials and programs that provide a systematic approach to overcoming learning difficulties. The program is tailored to fit each student’s individual needs through regular review and testing. The following are the primary national teaching methods that are used in the program.

Orton-Gillingham—This methods-based approach was specifically designed to teach reading to children with dyslexia. (more...)
F.A.S.T. Learning (Foundations of Analysis, Synthesis, Translation)—Developed by Stephen P. Tatum. F.A.S.T. Reading is a synthesis of whole language and phonetic instructional techniques. (more...)

Direct Instruction—A research-based approach that has been proven to be the most effective method for teaching all children, but especially those who are experiencing learning difficulties. (back...)

Our tutoring program closely follows the Direct Instruction teaching method—a research-based approach that has been proven to be the most effective method for teaching all children, but especially those who are experiencing learning difficulties. As stated on the Association for Direct Instruction web site (see link below):

“Direct Instruction is based on [the] theory that children can learn at an accelerated rate if educators deliver instructions that are clear, are able to predict likely misinterpretations and therefore reduce confusion, and assist in forming generalizations. It is a highly structured, intensive teaching program that aims to absolutely prepare the educator in such a way that all children learn to 100% mastery of the subject.
Every Direct Instruction program has been tested, retested, and undergone multiple revisions in an attempt to convey with absolute accuracy the intended information while remaining as efficient as possible.
Direct Instruction programs have also been statistically proven to be incredibly effective systems of teaching. Project Follow Through (FT), the largest education experiment in history, showed Direct Instruction to be the only educational system proven effective in educating children in all areas of application.”
Strategies to Teaching in Direct Instruction
  1. Model: The the skill that the student is supposed to learn.
  2. Lead: Lead the student through a set of examples of the skill.
  3. Test: Test the student with examples and nonexamples of the skill to see if mastery of the concept has been learned.
  4. Practice: Practice the skill in the context of the lesson
  5. Review: Review of the previously mastered skills.
